Garage Grown Gear, based out of Idaho is an online magazine and e-commerce website that helps connect outdoor enthusiasts to awesome innovative outdoor startups. As founder Amy Hatch dove in deeper love and involvement in packrafting, she soon found herself surrounded by all these amazing startups just waiting to get their name out and their stories told! As Garage Grown Gear grew Amy decided to join forces with Lloyd Vogel, founder of Big Outdoors, to bring you brand new startups and amazing stories at the click of a button and continue to scale and grow this powerhouse of a company!

  • What is Garage Grown Gear all about?
    • “We are all about outdoor startups and about connecting people to new products and new brands that they’ve never heard of before…”
  • How did you get started?
    • Amy: “For the past several years I’ve been deeply involved in the world of packrafting…as I got into the world of packrafting I started to realize how many cool innovative products are out there that you don’t find in big box stores…”
    • Lloyd: “My background is in education and guiding… when we go into the backcountry, when we go into wilderness areas, I feel like outdoorsy people are always searching for meaning…that relationship with their gear is something equally as significant…the gear that you’re brining should be representative of your experience…”

  • Amy, what motivated you to bring in another partner?
    • “There were a few motivating factors…I am just crazy passionate about marketing…being the CEO means doing a lot of other things other than marketing…”
  • What was it like building on Garage Grown Gear from the beginning to where you are now?
    • “…I did do a small round of friends and family fundraising when I first started out, which allowed me to make this my fulltime thing fairly off the bat… I knew that as a mom there was no working a day job then figuring this out at night…”
  • What did you do to have people trust in these brands they’ve never heard of?
    • “One of the things is that we curate our online store…in our database of companies we have 600 companies that we’ve come across out there and in our online store there’s 40 of those 600…”
  • What is something unique about Garage Grown Gear?
    • “One of the big things that separates Garage Grown Gear from other retailers is we’re not just selling products, we’re supporting them…This curated collection are products that are used by outdoor professionals that have been tried and tested…”
  • Have you had any mentors that helped build Garage Grown Gear?
    • Amy: “So many! The amount of generosity people have when you kindly ask for an hour of their time and you buy them a cup of coffee is truly astounding to me sometimes…Another kind of big callout I’d like to give is to the Startup Intensive…it’s basically a ten week entrepreneur’s boot camp…that was just super valuable for really helping give me the grounding of what it takes to launch a business…”
    • Lloyd: “Starting out Big Outdoors was a solo adventure for me…I’d say in particular, Austin over at CloudLine Socks was a real mentor in terms of trying to navigate the landscape of what it means to be an ecommerce business. Big outdoors was really centered around it’s social media presence and I can’t tell you the number of hours he sat down and talked with me about how to go about building a community of people…”

  • What has been your commitment to sustainability for the brands who Garage Grown Gear works with?
    • “We look at several factors. We look at if it’s USA made, we look at if it’s a real person with a real story of sustainability. Are they green? Are they considering our planet in some way? And of course the quality of the product too…”
  • What is the culture like within Garage Grown Gear?
    • “Being a cloud based company has actually been shockingly easy in terms of stepping into that community and really getting to understand that culture of it. We we sit down as a team weekly…it’s always interesting seeing where people are at…I have to say I love having a cloud based business…”
  • What has been one of the hardest parts about building garage grown gear?
    • “I think the most difficult part about starting any small business is figuring out how to allocate time and resources and what’s going to really give you the maximum returns from where you’re investing both of those things…”
  • What would you say is your biggest fear in regards to Garage Grown Gear?
    • “Just continuing to be able to scale the business and continuing to grow and add companies and products that are meaningful and relevant to our community…”
  • What advice would you give to someone that wanted to start a business?
    • “My advice to people is to pick one or two channels and knock it out of the park, and pick the channels where your customers are and be really really good at those one or two marketing channels…”
  • Where do you see garage grown gear headed into the future?
    • “We’re really hoping to expand the products that we’re offering and the companies we work with and really becoming that place where companies come to feature their products after they’ve launched…”
  • What would you say is the best part about running Garage Grown Gear?
    • “Being able to live in the Teton Mountains in a small town of two thousand do my dream job, and the other thing is the creativity that goes into a business…you can react to what you’re noticing and make quick changes without having to go through a bunch of bureaucracy and red tape…”
