Josh sits down with Huppy Bar founder Lyndsay Hupp. Huppy Bar is a snack bar made to inspire adventure while delivering a nutrition packed slice of deliciousness to any would be traveller, doer, mover, or shaker. Lyndsay caught the spark of this idea when out boating and finding that her trailmix had all melted together into delicious clumps. From there, she started to adjust what went into the mix to make herself the perfect snack when on the go. It wasn’t long until, friends, family, and clients caught on, even dubbing her bars ‘Huppy Bars’ which really turned up the flame of entrepreneurship in Lyndsay. Join us as we dive into how Huppy Bars was created, developed, and where it’s headed into the future!

  • What is Huppy Bar all about?
    • “It’s truly the whole package for energy bars, it’s whole foods, based with nuts and seeds, and it’s very dense so you get a lot out of the little bar…”
  • How did you get started with Huppy Bar?
    • “…It all started, like any good boatman story would start, ‘there I was on, on my boat, on the river…’ I pulled out this bar of gnarled chocolate nut, fruit, and seeds and things…I gnawed on it a little and it was delicious…that started this little obsession, just for myself to have on these trips…”
  • Where are you from and how did that lead to living in Arizona?
    • “I grew up in Columbus, Ohio in the suburbs. I didn’t know what white water rafting, mountain biking, or climbing was until my teenage years. I was an athlete through and through… I took a road trip with my sister when I was 17 who was starting school out in Arizona…I saw the mountain, saw the south west, desert, canyons, and immediately just fell in love…”
  • So what was the next step once you were out there?
    • “I ended up graduating college with a degree in Biology and then right after that I started full time guiding the Grand Canyon…That just immediately changed me, I was full in…The thought of taking my own boat down the river was something I thought was beyond realistic for me but, once I was hired and brought on as a trainee I just hopped on board and said I wanted to learn everything about the process…and I had a full time career there for ten years…”
  • What was it like developing the bars into what they are now?
    • “As far as the development went, it was a lot of staying true to my personal needs in the beginning. I wanted whole food, things that I could pronounce and pull out of my kitchen, and know that it’s packed with nutrition for me…those were the things that really drew in the ingredients…”
  • What was the process of building Huppy Bar as a company?
    • “I feel like with most things in the business world, as much as you put in you’re going to get out. In the first couple years, I was just tinkering around with the idea…I was always getting really positive responses and that definitely fueled me to do more…It took a little while because I didn’t fully commit right out of the gates…What started to move it more was going to events…social media, and just being vocal about it in my community. I have a lot of friends who are out there doing things…so the ambassadorship that has happened is awesome and still is…”

  • Where there any mentors who helped you get Huppy Bar off the ground?
    • “As far as someone I would come back to over and over again, it was hands down my dad. He’s been an entrepreneur throughout a lot of his adult life and so he has some details of the goings on of business…”
  • What is your commitment to sustainability?
    • “One of the biggest thing is we’re incorporating as many as organic ingredients as we can at this point and we’re over 65%…we’re also trying to source locally as much as possible and within a tight region…”
  • What does a normal day at Huppy Bar look like for you?
    • “I try to stay away from normal days as much as possible…I get up early, sometimes I do a little yoga in the morning, drink some coffee…I’ll go down and check out the production or check the orders…I usually fit in a hike, a bike, or something outside everyday. For a while there, when I was really grinding the gears, I had to shelf the outdoor time…that didn’t last very long though…”
  • What is the manufacturing process like?
    • “We’re in house right now. I dabbled in outsourcing and I’m not sure about that…it’s going, it’s great. As we grow we’ll need to look for bigger systems but, that’s all part of the process. In the meantime we’re in downtown flagstaff, just knock on our door and say hello!…”
  • Do you spend a lot of your time making the bars?
    • “Yeah, we have a team…we got a crew that keeps it going and does a great job. I’m definitely not void of the scenario yet but, I’ve found I have a lot of other things to do. Every once in a while I’ll hop in there, roll up my sleeves, and get it done…”
  • What is your greatest fear and how do you manage it?
    • “Fear is definitely a state I don’t like to live in much…I think that one of the biggest things is you just don’t want to miss something. You’re making decisions kind of more regularly now that are bigger decisions and it’s just the fear of missing an opportunity that could have been great…The only way to mitigate that is to remember that I’m going with my gut…”

  • What are some of the biggest mistakes that you’ve made in regards to Huppy Bar?
    • “I knew, starting this thing I was going to make a hundred million mistakes but, that was all part of the fun for me…I was on a river trip and there was a passenger when I was just starting to talk about these bars and had samples. One of my passengers offered to invest and give me a bunch of capitol…I told him ‘I appreciate that but, I’m going to decline because I want to plant that seed and watch it grow’…I really wanted to have this raw open experience with it and see what happens…”
  • What advice would you give someone that wanted to start a business?
    • “You gotta go with your gut and you have to trust yourself to know that you’re going to follow through with what you sought out to do. You’re going to be head down, workin’ hard, and not loving it every once in a while…there’s not way to know until you go find out…”
  • Where do you see Huppy Bar headed into the future?
    • “In the next year I definitely want to keep things truckin’ along in the growing sense…We have this Arizona trail wild mesquite bar that’s just super fun and hilights the mesquite flower. We work with a tribe in southern california that harvests it every year. So that’s just a really fun project that we just got going last year…”
  • What’s the best part about running Huppy Bar?
    • “Free Huppy Bars for life!…One of the best things about it is it brings together a lot of interests in my life. I love getting outside and going on adventures, that’s what the whole point of this thing was and so, it perpetuates that idea beyond my boundaries into the rest of the world…”
