Show Notes:

  • Who is the perfect fit for an Under30Experience trip?
    • “I would say anybody who wants to travel who is between the ages between 21 and 35. The perfect person is someone who is stuck behind their desk and wants to get out and meet new people…”
  • What is your background and what is your mission with Under30experiences?
    • “I grew up doing outdoor stuff…long story short, I found myself in New York City and I hadn’t been on a pair of skis in several years. I took my backcountry equipment to Iceland…and I said what am I doing paying $3,000 something dollars a month for a tiny little shoe box in New York City…”
  • Did you move out of New York before or after you started Under30Experiences?
    • “Under30CEO was going really well and we were getting all this notoriety and press…and then I kind of got into the soul searching thing…”
  • Do you still lead the trips that you have come up with?
    • “It’s crazy and I’m not trying to fluff any of this. This summer I was on four different continents…we want to keep quality really really high and that’s why I still do go on some of them…”
  • Where is Under30Experience based out of?
    • Matt describes where his team is located and how each of the different people in the Under30Experience family is spread out all over the world
  • How did you develop these trips and test them to figure out what young people are looking for?
    • “Anybody can show up with a group of people, jam themselves into double rooms, and stay at a mountainside resorts and buy some lift tickets…But delivering that first time traveler experience to a place like Peru where the logistics are difficult…we decided to stick to our bread and butter and bringing people to more exotic destinations…”
  • Did you always want to start a business?
    • “It wasn’t even that I always wanted to start a business, I always have started business, whether it was a lemonade stand to selling golf balls I had picked out of the pond on ebay…”
  • Did you have any mentors that helped guide you to where you are now?
    • “I did most of the networking, meeting my mentors and idols starting at a really young age… Most of my mentors are virtual mentors…”
  • Do you guys have a focus on sustainability with your travel programs?
    • “Absolutely! This is something that we talk about everyday. We can see places change as more tourists come there… 5 years ago if you told people you were going to Iceland, you were crazy. Now a lot of people are going to Iceland…I have seen the difference in just the few years when I go back there that those glaciers are melting…”

  • What would you say is the culture that exists within Under30Experiences?
    • “Within our team it is really ‘get your shit done and you can go have fun.’ That is really what I like to live by myself. I like to get up early, knock stuff out and then go reap the benefits and have that flexibility…”
  • What would you say has been one of the hardest parts about building Under30Experiences?
    • “I would say just the start. The start was so difficult, we were begging people basically to take our trips. We were in the wrong market, we were bloggers, young entrepreneur bloggers…”
  • What would you say has been one of the biggest mistakes that you’ve made so far?
    • “Everybody always told me personally to think of what you want out there on the market, and then go and create that and find people to buy it. That’s great advice, to anybody who’s listening, that’s a good way to start to think about it…”
  • What is the relationship between you and Jared?
    • “It’s interesting, he and I have known each other since fourth grade and we’ve worked together since about 2008. So, we know each other very well…We have such complementary skills that sometimes we don’t even need to speak…”
  • What is in store for the future with Under30Experiences
    • “This is something your readers will appreciate but, I’d suggest everyone go pick out the book by Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia. In Let My People Go Surfing, his excellent book, he talks about how it’s about the process. He never intended for Patagonia to be a multi-national company. He just did it…”
    • “Focusing on the process is the most important thing. One year we want to start having longer itineraries, we’re doing multi-country trips, we’d like to expand into Asia, and still hit places people are afraid to hit on their own…”
  • What would you say is one of the best parts about running Under30Experiences?
    • “The meeting the cool people part and I want to expand that and say that it makes it extra special when you meet them in these places…”
